818th Tank Destroyer Battalion DocumentsHistory of the 818thThis History was written by (Major) Ted L. Haworth (Executive Officer)(deceased) and edited and typed by his daughter. The history is based on monthly reports of the Battalion's activities to the War Department prepared by Major Haworth and Mason Carter (Hdq & Hdq Co). These reports included: missing members, those Killed In Action, other casualties, number of POWs, number of lost vehicles, captured vehicles and guns, map locations, miles traveled, and other matters. The reports were typed by Mason Carter under all kinds of combat conditions-including weather, battles, shellings, and troop movements.
818th RostersThe 818th rosters were originally maintained by Mrs. Pauline Scott (deceased wife of Oril Scott-deceased "A" Co.). At that time photo-copiers were not available. Mrs.. Scott had to have someone type the rosters, thereby introducing a lot of mistakes. Starting in 1975 she was assisted with this task by Oscar Gingrich (Recon Co.). Mr. Gingrich already had a typewriter and a mimeograph machine and compiled a card file. From that time on until 1986 Mrs. Scott (from the south) and Mr. Gingrich (from the north) exchanged info on changes to the roster. Since Mrs. Scott's death in 1986, Mr. Gingrich had sole responsibility for maintaining and distributing the rosters until his death in 2010. He used a word processor since 1997, further reducing the number of mistakes that appeared in previous rosters. We have not included personal information such as current addresses or phone numbers on this web site but in many cases these are available if you will contact us.
818th ObituariesLet not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. - John 14 (KJV)
