Burley Gordon Shockey, 88, of Dallas, formerly of Sweet Home, passed away Thursday March 25th, 2010.
He was born in Witts Springs, Ark., to James Thompson and Zora Elizabeth (Bond) Shockey. Burley served in the Army during World War II. He was in Patton’s Third Army in the 818th Tank Destroyer Battalion. He served in all the major battles with Patton’s Army.
After the war, he moved to Sweet Home in 1947 and married Katholeen Elizabeth Trimble in 1949. They lived on Clark Mill Road in Sweet Home for more than 50 years. He worked at Champion Plywood in Lebanon for 33 years.
Burley was a member of First Baptist Church in Sweet Home and later Trinity Baptist in Lebanon. His church and church family were very important to Burley. He enjoyed gardening, reading and fishing. He loved baking and canning and was a great cook.
Burley is survived by his son, “Gene” Burley Eugene Shockey and wife Jean of Monmouth; daughter Judith Diane Woody and husband Jeff of Mocksville, N.C.; brothers Otto Shockey of Redmond and Loyal Shockey of Klamath Falls; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Katholeen, in 1974; and sister Maudie May.
Viewing will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Mount Calvary Baptist Church. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m., also at Mount Calvary Baptist Church.
