John L. Berry, 84, of Fort Madison, died at 12:25 a.m., Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at Fort Madison Community Hospital.

He was born on Aug. 26, 1921 in Fonda, the son of Fred and Bertha (Tomson) Berry. He married Mary Parsons on Nov. 23, 1940. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during WWII where he was a sergeant with the 818th Tank Destroyer Battalion (B company) and was awarded a Bronze Star. He had worked at the maintenance department for the Sheaffer Pen Co. He was also an independent truck driver. He was of the Christian faith.

 

Survivors include his wife Mary of Fort Madison; a son, Thomas (wife Wanda) Berry of Homewood, Ill.; two daughters, Joyce Brown of Fort Madison and Linda (husband Morgan) Jones of Phoenix, Ariz.; five grandchildren; one great-grandson, and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and four sisters.
