John Cannon Obituary:
John Leighton Cannon, 93, of Shyville Road, Piketon, Ohio, died 3:28 p.m. Wednesday, 10 October 2018 at his home.
He was born 19 December 1924 in New York City, New York, the son of the late George Leighton Cannon and Lillian (Breakell) Cannon. On 7 October 1946, John was united in marriage to Helen Dorothy (Matthews) Cannon, who preceded him in death on 24 May 2015.
Surviving are four sons. Joseph George Cannon and wife Amelia Dyar of Jacksonville, Florida, John L. Cannon, Jr., and wife Luann of Chillicothe, Ohio, David W. Cannon and wife Susan of Parish, Florida and Carl Cannon and wife Dianne of Waverly, two daughters, Frances Arlene Frogale of Washington Court House, Ohio and Lois Ann Martello and husband Kevin of Haughton, Louisiana, twelve grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, and a sister, Ann Maas and husband John of Florida.
John was a member of the Saint Mary Queen of the Missions Church of Waverly, Ohio, Nation Association of Corrosion Engineers, Columbus Chapter of the American Society of Metals, and the Atomic Operetta Guild. John retired after 31 years of service at the Goodyear Atomic Energy Plant.
John had a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Marietta College, Marietta, Ohio and a Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgy from Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio.
John is a decorated World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. He served three years in the U.S. Armed Forces, with fifteen months overseas duty under General Patton’s third army. He served in the 818th Tank Destroyer Battalion Company C. During World War II, John was awarded five battle metals. He was the recipient of a Purple Heart from wounds suffered in the Battle of the Bulge. He was honorable discharged on 2 September 1945.
His wife, parents, two brothers, Leon and Al Cannon, two sisters, Frances Greenburg and Mary Lou Vaughn, and a son-in-law Carmen Frogale, preceded John in death.
Graveside services will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family in Mound Cemetery, Piketon, Ohio
